FAQ

Why should I take Elderberry Syrup?

The Sambucus Nigra, or Black Elderberries in our syrup are prized for their medicinal properties and have been used in traditional folk medicine for centuries. These elderberries are filled with potent antioxidants called anthocyanins and flavanols, which fight free radicals in the body and offer many different health benefits. Antioxidants can reduce harmful inflammation that can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, and even cancer. Antioxidants also offer a powerful boost to the immune system, helping to fight invading germs and keep you healthy.

Is Elderberry Syrup safe for pregnancy & breastfeeding?

Yes. We get this question a lot. From my experience as a breastfeeding mother of 4 thriving children, it is completely safe. There is no known research to suggest that elderberry has any adverse side effects, drug interactions, or overdose issues in pregnant and breastfeeding women. (1)

Is Elderberry Syrup safe for children?

Yes. Sow N Reap Co Elderberry Syrup is suitable for children over the age of 1. As honey is not recommended for children under 1, we recommend Sow N Reap Co “The Vegan” Elderberry Syrup which substitutes the honey in the blend for maple syrup.

How do I give Elderberry Syrup to my child?

It’s all in the presentation! Avoid referring to it as medicine, but rather as a yummy treat! Babies can take the syrup via a syringe for ease, and toddlers may get a kick out of administering it to themselves. Our Family has a special “Elderberry Time” each day when the whole family enjoys their dose together. The syrup is great straight out of the bottle, but Children also love it in smoothies, drizzled over fruit and yogurt, or frozen in icy poles on a hot day. You can even pop a dose into your child’s water bottle, and they can sip on it during the day at home or at childcare! You can be as creative as you like!

Can Elderberry Syrup ease flu symptoms?

An age-old cold & flu elixir, Elderberry is also widely reported for its health benefits in modern clinical research. One study of 60 patients administered 15ml elderberry or placebo syrup during the flu season in 1999-2000, and those using elderberry saw their flu symptoms ease four days earlier than those using the placebo.

Can I take Elderberry Syrup every day?

Yes. Elderberry Syrup can be taken daily for year-round immune support. Naturopaths refer to Elderberry as having a “high reference range” which means that it can be taken in very high concentrations consistently over long periods of time.

Is Elderberry Syrup high in Quercetin?

Yes. According to USDA data, elderberries contain an impressive 27 milligrams of Quercetin per 100grams, which is among the highest levels of the compound found in any fruit or vegetable.

What is the recommended dose?

We recommend use once daily, or up to three times daily.

Children – 5ml (1 Teaspoon)

Adults – 15ml (1 Tablespoon)

If you are symptomatic or becoming unwell, we recommend a dose every 2-3 hours. Our family takes one to two doses daily during the winter months to boost immunity, aid in prevention of colds and flus, and to lessen the severity and duration of symptoms in the instance that sickness does occur.

What is the best way to store Elderberry Syrup and how long does it last?

Elderberry Syrup is best stored in the refrigerator. Sow N Reap Co Elderberry Syrup has been quality tested in a lab and is estimated to last for approximately 6 months in the fridge from the date it was blended. Your bottle will include a best before date for reference.
